Nobody Can Help Everyone… But Everyone Can Help Somebody.

Rachel Hunnicutt-Knight

A friend of mine has undertaken a pretty big project, trying to help a family that has been friends for many years, in raising the co-payment for a life-saving surgery for their daughter.

This young lady is very fortunate. Why would I say such a thing? Well, to start with, she’s fighting cancer for the third time, before even hitting her 25th birthday. She’s beaten it twice already, and is prepared to beat it again. Then there’s the fact that she has medical insurance, so she only has to worry about a small portion of the cost of the surgery. Her part, you ask? The co-pay is $80,000!

I guess that’s the part where her luck doesn’t seem so hot.

Her cancer, after a seven year remission, was found to have spread to her bone marrow. So now, her only hope is a bone marrow replacement. The fact that only 1 in 20,000 candidates are a perfect match as donors, and that her sister has already been ruled out, might be enough to get most of us down, but not Rachel. Rachel’s husband Shawn and five year old daughter, Alexa, are both still works-in-progress, you see. And Rachel Hunnicutt-Knight never quits, ’til the job’s done!

Which brings me to the reason for this post. Rachel and Shawn don’t have the $80,000. Her parents don’t either. So my buddy, Rob, with the help of some other good friends, have built a website, opened an account, and have undertaken to raise the money for the surgery. The website, Got-Marrow.org, has a Paypal button for those that can spare a contribution. Any amount will help, and will be greatly appreciated by Rachel, her husband and daughter, her parents, and a ton of friends that want to see her beat this thing again!

For those that can’t afford to make a cash contribution, we’re asking for your help in getting the word out. If you have a blog, we’d really appreciate it if you’d mention Rachel’s predicament and the website. If you don’t have a blog, then post the link (http://www.got-marrow.org/) on Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, MySpace….EVERYWHERE! Ask your friends and contacts to post it, re-Tweet it, and pass it on to others. This is a situation that really warrants going viral! This family has been active in helping others for a long time, and now, they need help.

Re-reading this, I imagine that there will be some folks that think, “Yeah, just another scam!” Well, you’re wrong, folks… it’s not a scam. I wish it was! That would be so much better than thinking of what this family is going through. Rachel could be my daughter… or yours! Alexa could be my grand-daughter… or yours! Rachel could be me… or you!

If you’d like to follow along with Rachel on her blog, you can see it at http://itsadoabledeal.blogspot.com/. And if you post something on your blog or website, please link to Got-Marrow.org. They need the traffic a LOT more than I do! I know a lot of you out there are SEO and SEM artists. Here’s a chance to do your stuff, for a very worthy cause!

I think Rob’s idea says it very well:

Nobody can help everyone… but everyone can help somebody.

That would be great, wouldn’t it, Cricket? We need some SEM heavy-hitters to chime in here, and give us a hand taking Rachel’s situation viral!

Excellent post Doc. I’m sitting with Rachel’s mom right now, and she said to tell you guys “you rock”… and “thank you”.

Doc, you’re a good man. I will write something about this on my blog this weekend, and I will see how much $$ I can contribute to help Rachel. I will pray for her and her family…

Thanks, Joel. If you can put in a plug for her, I know it’ll help. Good to see you stop by! Reckon it’s my turn now, huh? 😉

I don’t earn that much but hopefully, what I can donate on this coming paycheck can help. What I’d do though is let my circle of family and friends know about it and I know and hope that there will be more out there that can help.

Thanks, Jabo. Any help that you and your friends and family can offer, whether dollars or just getting the word out, will be greatly appreciated. Rachel’s Mom, Sandy, has been blown away by the number of people standing up to help, and by the fact that they’re doing so from all over the world. Every single dollar will help, and every single comment, bookmark and blogpost will give Rachel and her family more strength to fight this battle.
